Factors When Purchasing Your New Refrigerator

If you’re a new homeowner, the appliance market is more confusing than a puzzle on “Jeopardy!”. It’s easy to get lost in all the terminology and complicated lingo. Fortunately, here is an easy-to-read guide complete with key advice just for you.

Consider these factors when purchasing your new refrigerator:

1) Capacity

The size of the fridge will vastly impact how much stuff it can hold and how spacious it will feel. Compact fridges have capacities of 0.8 to 1.4 cubic feet, midsized fridges house 1.6 to 2.2 cubic feet, and large fridges accommodate 2.4 to 6 cubic feet of storage space.

2) Energy Star Rating

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set standards for the energy efficiency of appliances and air conditioners which all manufacturers strive to meet or exceed. Anything from 0 to 80 (on a 100-point scale) is considered exceptional, 81 to 84 is very good, 85 to 87 is good, and 88 and up is average. Look for this rating on the EnergyGuide sticker when purchasing your refrigerator (most newer models will have one).

3) Liquid / Ice Dispenser

This is most easily identified by the square metal lip on the door which serves as a water dispenser cup. The amount and type of ice you can make will depend on the size of the cube. The more cubes, the more water you’ll need to freeze. Also, if there is a separate ice maker in your fridge, that will necessitate extra water usage as well.

4) Interior Lighting

Pastel lighting, or a glowing magenta-blue hue, is great for keeping things visible but not garish. Fluorescent lighting seems to be the trend lately, however, it isn’t the best light source since it’s artificial light and has a shorter lifespan than incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are more expensive but will last much longer, so they’re a great option if you like the look.

Now that you know how to make sense of your refrigerator options, shop confidently knowing that you won’t be making any silly mistakes. You can buy with peace of mind and confidence knowing that you’ll find the perfect refrigerator for your home.
